It’s a drugs bust!
What kills me about this is that 4th gif.
Think ahead to Scandal, where John has become his warden; where it’s apparent how much he will and does sacrifice to help Sherlock battle this continuous problem. Think of Hounds, when they’ve made so much progress—clearly with John as the closing gate between Sherlock and his drugs.
Now look at that gif.
It’s a confession; he’s trying to get John to shut the fuck in front of the police, but there is—tragically—so much more in that look. Because whatever Sherlock is trying to say, the truth of that look is, “Actually, I’ve got a problem. A big problem. A problem I’m losing to; the only problem I can’t solve. It’s killing me. You only met me yesterday, and you don’t know what I do when you’re not around. I shoot up. I wear nicotine patches on my arm to cover up the bruises. I am, in fact, a hopeless addict. John.”
There is a rather painful moment of awkwardness here where Sherlock is giving John a really, really meaningful look, and John—rather than taking the message—responds with incredulity, and Sherlock has to reflexively batter off the incriminating impression that he was trying to communicate anything to John at all.
I don’t know. It just kills me to see that look, trying so desperately to communicate without words, knowing what’s behind it.
